ComedyWriter.org: Where Comedy Writing Saves the World (Sort of)
Hello and welcome, future comedy legends, casual chucklers, and people who got here by total accident while Googling “how to make friends using sarcasm”!
You’ve just stumbled into the sacred digital temple of comedy writing, a place where punchlines are holy, satire is our sword, and type o's are sometimes funnier than the actual jokes.
Here at ComedyWriter.org, I believe comedy writing is more than just stringing together witty remarks, observational nuggets, and the occasional poop joke (although, let’s be honest, poop jokes are eternal). Comedy writing is an art, a craft, and, let’s not be afraid to say it, a life-saving public service. Okay, maybe not “life-saving” in the traditional sense, but laughter does strengthen your abs, that's got to count for something.
So why, you ask, is comedy writing important? Excellent question, inquisitive stranger with great taste. Buckle up. We’re about to take a slightly exaggerated, moderately dramatic, and wildly unnecessary deep dive into the life-altering magic of comedy writing.
1. Because the World is on Fire and We Need a Giggle
Let’s address the flaming wheelie bin of an elephant in the room: the world is… a lot. Every day, headlines swing between "mildly concerning" and “apocalyptic” Climate change, political chaos, social media influencers named after fruits, it’s all enough to make a grown adult sob into their microwave dinner.
But here’s the thing, when everything feels too serious, too overwhelming, or just plain too much, comedy steps in with it's glitter cannon and a resounding kazoo solo to say: “Hey, it’s okay to laugh at the absurdity. You’re not alone in this mess.”
Comedy writing offers a pressure valve for society’s collective stress bladder. It helps us take all that existential dread and package it into a neat little sketch, stand-up set, or satirical news article that makes people laugh and think, hopefully in that order. And if they snort coffee out of their nose while reading it? Even better. That’s the comedy writer’s equivalent of a mic drop.
2. Because Someone Has to Explain the World Using Cats and Wordplay
Humanity has long relied on comedy to understand itself. From ancient Greek plays to medieval jesters to “Britains Got Talent,” we’ve always turned to funny people with pens (or quills, or aggressively loud laptops) to decode our madness.
Comedy writers are modern philosophers in sweatpants. We look at the world’s weirdness and go, “Alright, how do we explain this using a badger, a pun, and a throwback to a ‘90s sitcom?” And somehow, it works. Satire, parody, sketch, absurdist fiction, comedic essays, these are the tools we use to pick apart culture, poke fun at power, and make fart jokes that double as commentary on capitalism.
It’s a strange skill set. It requires brains, timing, empathy, and the emotional resilience to be ghosted by an open mic night crowd. But comedy writers are willing to go there, for the noble cause of making someone in a doctor’s waiting room chuckle at a headline like: “Local Man Discovers Inner Peace After Wi-Fi Outage”.
3. Because Laughing Is Basically Brain Yoga
Let’s get scientific for a moment, because, why not? When you laugh, your brain releases endorphins. (Nothing like the mammal) Endorphins are those happy little chemicals that say, “You’re okay, buddy. Keep going.” Laughter lowers stress, boosts your immune system, and even helps you bond with other people, especially if you both laugh at the same obscure Monty Python or Hitch-Hikers Guide reference.
Comedy writing is the source code behind all that joy. It’s the blueprint for laughter, the secret formula (equal parts timing, surprise, and weird metaphors about cheese) that makes humor happen. Comedy writers are the alchemists turning everyday awkwardness into gold.
You know that one friend who always has the perfect comeback, the hilarious group chat meme lord, the coworker who makes meetings tolerable with one perfectly timed quip? Comedy writers are that friend, professionally. We’re not just trying to be funny, we’re engineering joy. Sure, we’re also crying in our car between deadlines, but mostly joy.
4. Because Tragedy + Time = Comedy (and Sometimes Rent Money)
It’s been said that comedy is tragedy plus time. But we say it’s also tragedy plus a deadline, a thesaurus, and a mind-bendingly strong cup of coffee. Some of the best comedy comes from the worst situations, because humour is how we cope, heal, and make sense of nonsense.
Whether it’s dealing with heartbreak, job loss, global pandemics, or your mum texting in all caps like she’s yelling through a megaphone, comedy lets us take those experiences and transform them into shared moments of “Oh my god, me too.”
Comedy writing is like emotional recycling. We take our pain, awkwardness, and deeply personal humiliations, and repackage them into content that makes others feel seen and less alone in their weird human struggles. That’s not just funny. That’s beautiful.
Also, if done well enough, you might get a Netflix special out of it. No pressure.
5. Because Someone Has to Keep the Puns Alive
Look, I’ll admit it. Comedy writers are the last defenders of the dad joke. The proud punsters. The people who see a sign that says “Caution: Wet Floor” and think, slippery when wet.
And while the world advances in AI, space travel, and increasingly expensive coffee drinks with unpronounceable names, we comedy writers are here making sure the noble pun doesn’t die out, like cursive writing or Blockbuster Video.
It’s not just about being silly (although it’s mostly about being silly). It’s about preserving a joyful, rebellious spirit in a world that takes itself way too seriously. We are jesters with keyboards, clowns with Wi-Fi, and weirdos with wordplay.
And we’re proud of it.
But Seriously!
Wallabies and Withies

One of the many 'little projects' I'm working on right now is a Dramedy or Comedy Drama called Wallabies and Withies.
Coming from, and spending my formative years in rural Somerset I guess it was inevitable that I find a way of telling some of my childhood stories through my writing.
Write what you know is a popular phrase in our industry but in my humble opinion, is never cast in stone. As with every great comedy, the balance of real life, exaggerated characters and ridiculous situations can be stranger than the truth in some cases, but not all!
Ronald MacDonald (85), is a frail and bitter cattle Farmer from Somerset. Close to losing everything his estranged Grand-Daughter and her family come to his aid. Can her Outback Australian husband Baz and thier three children save the farm against all odds?
